Arranging flower bouquets can be intimidating, but it’s not. Our flower arranging guide teaches you how to arrange flower bouquets in three simple steps.
Step 1 – Vase, vase, vase
Flowers come in all shapes and sizes with different stem lengths and bud/flower volume, from long elegant lillies to shorter colourful peonies. They also come in many different overall sizes, from a few stems of gypsophila to 30 or more mixed stems in a large ‘wow’ bouquet. So, it’s important that you select a vase that will best accommodate your flower bouquet and make the most of the overall arrangement – after all you want your flower bouquet to look great and last as long as possible.
Start by measuring the length and stem volume (width) of your flower bouquet against your vase to make sure that your flower bouquet will have enough support and room to blossom comfortably; a simple rule of thumb is your vase should be not more that 50% of the height of your flower bouquet and each stem should have enough room to be removed easily but not too much that they ‘flop’ over the sides.
Always remember to clean your vase thoroughly, cut your stems diagonally with sharp scissors/knife and add flower food before you arrange your flower bouquet.
Step 2 – To arrange or not to arrange
If you’ve bought a hand-tied bouquet that has been pre-arranged and you want to keep the same flower arrangement in the vase simply keep the bouquet tied (you will see that flower bouquet itself is tied together once you remove the packaging) and follow the instructions in Step 1 only cutting the tie at the last minute before you place them in the vase (as long as you hold the stems as you do this the flower bouquet should remain fully in tact).
If however, you’d like to sperate the flower bouquet and re-arrange in your vase then place your flowers in order of height from the centre of the vase and work out in a circular motion placing the shorter flowers towards the edges and making sure the stems are at a 45 degree angle creating a ‘spiral’ effect. You can finish with your greenery placing it evenly between your flower bouquet.
Step 3 – Refresh and care
You can refresh your flower bouquet every other day by cutting the stems, cleaning the vase and adding fresh water and flower food – this will give you the opportunity to practice arranging the flowers and keep your flower bouquet in the best possible condition – your flower bouquet won’t suffer from being handled as long as you are gentle, and it receives fresh water and a bit of love 😉
